Debate Writing

Debate Writing: A debate is a contest between two speakers or two groups of speakers to show skill and ability in arguing. Speakers are required to speak for or against a proposition, a question or a problem. To participate in a debate, one must prepare an outline of the main points in the order in which one is going to argue. Every topic / subject has its own vocabulary. These must be learnt. The speaker addresses the chair (Mr. President / Madam), 'submits' an argument, 'appeals' for sympathetic understanding and support, 'questions' the opponent's views and 'concludes' an argument.

Question : You have to speak in a debate for the motion that "Life in a village is preferable to life in a city." Write what you want to say in this regard in not more than 200 words.

Answer : Ladies and Gentlemen,

I ................. stand before you to support the motion that "Life in a Village is preferable to life in a City".

My opponents gloat over the comforts and conveniences of city life. They appear charmed by the hustle and bustle of town life. The harsh noise of scooters, motor bikes, cars and trucks seems to have made them completely deaf to the sweet and melodious chirping of the birds and the rustling of leaves of beautiful and evergreen trees of the village fields. The dirt and smoke emitted by automobiles and industry have completely blinded them to the beauty and charm of nature. They seem to have lost their soul to the fast life of the cities.

I would like to draw the attention of the audience to the peaceful and quiet and serene atmosphere of the village. How soothing it is to the mind and the body, my opponents fail to comprehend! There is nothing to irritate your eyes and ears in a village. The air is fresh, pure and unpolluted. Green fields present a lovely sight. Trees provide shade. Furthermore, life in a village is tension-free. People live longer and are healthy. In cities, on the other hand, you find a mushroom growth of clinics and hospitals. And even then, these are crowded because people are always coming to them for treatment of their diseases caused by pollution in the cities.

Finally, I would like to point out that people in the city have lost human touch. They have become selfish and self centred. Feeling of brotherhood and friendship seem to have been completely lost in a city. In contrast, people in villages are very friendly. They are ever cooperative and helpful.

I, therefore; strongly support the view that "Life in a village is preferable to life in a city".

Thank you !
